What exactly is sliced cheese?
Sliced cheese is much more than just cheese cut into slices. Whilst sliced Emmental is legally classified as a hard cheese, sliced cheese forms its own distinct category. It is characterised by a moisture content in the fat-free cheese mass of between 54 and 63 per cent. It is prized for its smooth texture and is usually made from pure cow’s milk. Whether it has a traditional rind, a fine red smear or a protective wax coating, and whether sold as a whole wheel or block, it stays fresh for a long time on the cheese counter.
The best way to enjoy sliced cheese
With its moist yet firm texture, sliced cheese is the centrepiece of any proper Bavarian snack. It’s easy to slice or dice and adds a special touch to sandwiches, salads and packed lunches. Thanks to its excellent melting properties, it is also ideal for topping gratins, for hearty oven-baked dishes or as a delicious addition to cheese fondues.
